WHY STUDY CLASSICAL ISLAMIC THEOLOGY?
The defining characteristics of post-modern thought include critical theory, skepticism, and moral and intellectual relativism. These trends and perspectives present an array of difficulties for seekers of truth and theists. Post-modern atheism is often met with frail and inconsistent responses from untrained Muslims. Novel attempts to defend the faith using arguments that are divorced from an authentic connection with the tradition of Usul al-Din will not suffice. What is our position regarding the reality of knowledge, faith, reason and morality? Classical Islamic theology provides the intelligent Muslim with answers through a foundation upon which a modern discourse can be built.  The timeless epistemological framework and sound methodologies laid out and elucidated by expert Muslim theologians in classical Islamic works await to be rediscovered by serious students who wish to learn and empower themselves to critically understand the world, its origin, our purpose and where we are headed.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:
The text of study, Umm al-Barahin (The Mother of Proofs), with Shaykh Ramzy Ajem,  is an intermediate text in the science of Islamic theology written by Imam Abu Abdullah Muhammad ibn Yusuf al-Sanusi al-Hasani (832 - 895 AH).  Students will cover Shaykh Ramzy's English translation of the entire text with his commentary, slide presentation and recommended reading resources in English.  The course will be taught online and in-person within twenty 1.5 hour sessions, God willing.

Upon successful completion of this course, students will reliably demonstrate the ability to:
  • compare and contrast the differences between the theological schools within Islam
  • recall and outline the main principles and sources of knowledge in Islamic epistemology
  • construct the evidences for the temporality of the cosmos
  • illustrate the proof for the existence and attributes of God
  • list the evidences that denote the transcendence of God above temporal qualities
  • assess counterclaims against the existence of God
  • analyze and explain the difficulties related to the topic of good, evil, free will and Divine destiny
  • list the evidences for the truth of God's Messengers and their necessary qualities
  • list the foundational tenets of faith that have reached us through multiple chains of transmission from God's final Messenger (God bless him and give him peace)
